The Knees Project

Following the successful aquistion of The Knees in April 2008 (see latest news for full story) work has already begun

in clearing some of the many trees and tangled undergrowth on the 3 acre grassland site adjacent to the woodland where once stood the original engine shed and carriage sidings of the railway in it's heyday. It is the railway's intention to rebuild the engine shed on or as near to it's original site when funds permit and lay further sidings for storage of it's many items of rolling stock. A machinery compound is also being planned as well as establishing good parking facilities for visitors. This is probably one of the biggest projects the railway has undertaken since reopening the line from 1989 to 1995 and we will update this page in line with the various stages of progress being made. As a point of interest we have included a photo of the original EKR reservoir which was used to pump water to the towers serving the steam locos, part of the remaining EKR fence line and a couple of pictures of the site of the original engine shed.

Flat bottom rail once served as the original EKR fence

around the reservoir. Shown below is an improvised gate

The reservoir now safely fenced off

Below shows the site of the original engine shed, note the small raised embankment it used to stand on

The Clearance begins - June 2008

Clearance work begins on the grass area adjacent to The Knees woodland by Tony Larkins our resident Estates Manager and qualified tree surgeon and Ron Norris the Permanent way Manager and all round superhero!!

Selective trees are being felled so that a variety of tasks can be undertaken , these being the establishment of an EKR compound, an area for customer parking and gradually clearance of the original engine shed site. The picture below left shows the area cleared for the compound and the picture below right shows the tree felling in progress
