Eythorne Toilet Wagon Project

One of our dedicated volunteers Ron Norris amongst all the other projects he is involved with is now undertaking one of the biggest challenges this year - to convert one of our BR box vans B776619 into a fully functional toilet wagon with 3 separate enclosed areas, gentlemen,unisex/ladies and disabled/baby changing. Each area will have it's own designated sink and the disabled toilet will feature a sliding door for easy access and exit and a call for assistance facility. The wagon when completed will be positioned at Eythorne Station platform 2.

This is just the first part of the project however as a ditch will need to be excavated at Eythorne to allow the toilets to be connected up to both the waste pipes and running water pipes,a mammoth task;hopefully made easier by the aquisition by Ron of a JCB. The toilets will replace the temporary chemical toilet huts at the site and progress the railway's Access For All intentions. Once completed this will make a great upgrade to the Eythorne Station facilities and the railway cannot thank Ron enough for his willingness and determination to ensure this happens.

The picture below left shows the position of 2 Gents urinals to be installed while the picture below right shows the layout for the disabled/baby changing facilities which will be situated directly in the middle of the wagon opposite the doors for easy access and the ladies toilet on the far right. As can be seen Ron has already wired individual lights into each of the areas.

August

In the space of a few weeks the transformation is amazing ,the pictures below mirror the pictures above with Ron installing urinals and sinks( Aided by his extremelly understanding wife Jill & Alan ) ceiling cladding and tiling. Roger has been doing a wonderful job of painting and the project will be stunning when completed . It is anticipated the toilet wagon will be ready in time for our Santa Specials commencing in December and will be invaluable.

Ron and his brother have also been undertaking work at Eythorne Station in preparation for the arrival of the completed wagon. Seen in the pictures below is the channel that has had to be dug underneath the railway track to connect to the main sewage pipe and the main waste pipe being laid into position ready for connection. It cannot be stated enough how important Ron is to the East Kent Railway ,since his arrival at the beginning of 2007 a multitude of projects have been launched and completed and his work ethic has spread throughout the membership to the point that everyone now believes that anything is achievable no matter how daunting it may at first seem.
